There Are Two Visa Classes To Consider When Retiring:

Investor Retirement Visa (subclass 405 – Temporary)

  • The first is the Investor Retirement Visa (subclass 405 – Temporary)This visa is the recommended visas for (new or first time applicants) who want to spend a portion of their retirement in Australia
  • The Retirement visa (405) is a temporary entry visa, and as such will not lead to permanent residency or to an Australian citizenship for retirees. One contingencies of the retirement visa is that only a spouse will be included in the application process, and no other dependent relatives can be included. This visa will allow couples or individuals over the age of 55 to live in Australia for four (4) years
  • Individuals must have assets valued at least A$750,000
  • Choosing to settle in regional australia/low population growth metropolitan areas will allow having assets valued at least A$500,000.

Retirement Visa (Subclass 410)

  • This is the visa that is intended for retirees and their spouses who want to spend some of their retirement years in Australia. Individuals are eligible to rollover their current Australian visa.  To apply for this visa individuals and their spouses are eligible if they can show that they are able to make a considerable long term financial investment in Australia.

This Visa While Active Will Allow Retirees To:


  • Allow re-enter or leave the country at any time
  • Allow retirees to work for up to 20 hours a week
  • Allow retirees to continue or undertake studies of their choice
  • Voluntary work is encouraged


Requirements & Eligibility For Retirement Visas Include:


Individuals must show evidence of sufficient up to date health insurance, with full comprehensive that provides coverage that is equal to that of Medicare, and has prescription coverage for medications as well. An additional requirement is a health evaluation that includes a physical exam, and possibly chest x rays.

Finally you will need to pay the non-refundable application charges that are mandatory for the different retirement visa applications, and individuals will be held responsible for any cost associated with translation fees of the visa if applicable.

  • Individuals from the United states, Chile, Malaysia, Thailand, and Turkey will need a work holiday (subclass 462) visa.

These visas will permit a person to stay and work for a period of 12 months, you may not work for any one employer for a period longer than a 3 month period, but the visa can possibly be extended for longer stay. Besides finding a job while on a holiday work visa individuals are required to file taxes and will need a TFN Number, and this takes approximately two weeks for a processing. Online applications can be filed which can speed the process, and if a TFN is not received before a work assignment an individual has 28 days to provide the TFN to an employer. It is important when your job assignment has ended to request a payment summary showing that lists  total income,  and any tax withheld, this will be very important when  it comes time to fill in as the compulsory tax return.
